Augrabies Falls National Park.

Location: About 50km NW of Kakamas. S28.59276° E20.33488°

Ablutions:   Clean. Hot water.

Electric:  Yes.  You may need a long lead.

Sites:   There are several grassed areas but you're not allowed to camp on them. There are braai stands dotted around the outside of the grassed areas, some have shade.

Other:There's a restaurant and 2 nice swimming pools. There are boardwalks with viewing platforms along the Orange River gorge. You can drive around the Park and there's a 4x4 trail.

Brandvlei. Oom Benna's.

Ablutions:  Spotless. Hot water from a gas boiler.

Electric:   No.

Sites:  Just 1 campsite next to self-catering accommodation.

 Other:  You have the use of a room with washing up sink, chairs, a large chest freezer and bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. No light pollution so great star viewing at night. It's quite close to the R27 so there may be some road noise.

Britstown. Kambro Accommodation and Farm Stall.

Ablutions:  Spotless. Hot water.

Electric:   Yes.

Sites:   There are 5 sites each with a grassed area, braai, electric point and drinking water tap. Numbers 1, 3 and 5 have the best shade.

 Other:  Close to the N12 so some noise from traffic overnight. There's a padstal with meat, jams, chuntneys, gifts etc and a restaurant. There's a large pool which was a bit green but fine for swimming. Useful for an overnight stop. Self-catering accommodation is also available.

Douglas. Broadwater River Estate.

Sites:  Situated on the banks of the Vaal River. Each site has a private bathroom, scullery and power point.

 Other:  There's a pool, bar and restaurant. Sunset cruises are availalbe at the Lodge.

Grobblershoop. Kheis Riverside Lodge.

Sites:  There are 10 marked sites  All have braai /fire stands and electric points.

 Other:  The site is on the banks of the Orange River. There's a bar and restaurant. You can swim in the river or there's a small pool - a bit green when we were there.

Melton Wold Guest Farm

Electric:   Yes.

Sites:  10 sites around a large grass field with an electric point, tap and braai.

 Other:  You can drive or hike around the farm or use the facilities - a pool, tennis courts etc.

Mokala National Park. Motswedi Camp.

Location:  60km SW of Kimberley.

Ablutions:   Clean. Each site has it's own shower and toilet.

Electric:   No.

Sites:  There are 6 sites overlooking a small waterhole. Each site has it's own kitchen area (stove and fridge) and ablutions. Hot water from solar panels.

 Other:  The waterhole was regularly visited by wildlife when we were there. There are several routes that you can drive around the Park. Note: there are no predators in the park.

Richtersveld National Park.  De Hoop camp.

Ablutions:  There are 3 ablutions blocks set out along the campsites. They are all in need of attention - we were told that they are going to be replaced. When we were there the middle ones had no water and some idiots had left rubbish in plastic bags in the ladies which the monkeys have ripped open and spread everywhere. Best to check the ablutions before you decide where to camp unless you're happy to drive to them.

Electric:   No.

Sites:  There are no marked sites, just pitch wherever you want. There are some braai stands and also several stone fire rings.  There's not a lot of shade.

 Other: From the Senderlingsdrift Entry it took us 2 1/2 hours to drive the 44km to De Hoop. In January we only saw 2 other vehicles during our 3 days at De Hoop.  We were able to drive along the valley to the Richtersveld campsite.

Southerland 1.  Sterland Caravan Park

Electric:   Yes.

Sites: 7 marked gravel sites amongst trees.

 Other:  Convenient for visiting the Sutherland Observatory.

Sutherland 2. Verlatenkloof Guest Farm.

Location: 25km south of Sutherland. S32 33 27.2 E20 33 12.6

Ablutions:  Clean. Hot water from a donkey boiler.

Electric:   Yes.

Sites: There are sereral sites amongst some trees.

 Other:  You have to negotiate deep gullies to get onto the sites - OK for off-road caravans but not others. This is a working farm with goats and sheep. The farm is in a narrow valley close to the road, however there's not a lot of traffic.

Springbok Caravan Park

Ablutions:  Spotless. Hot water.

Electric:   Yes.

Sites:  Plenty of marked sites. 8 are on grass and the rest have gravel with a bit of grass next to it. All sites have a braai, electric point and water tap. There are lots of trees around the site but most are, as yet, quite small.

 Other:  At the ablutions block there's a room with sinks for washing up and laundry - hot water. There's a well-maintained pool. The supermarkets in Springbok have a good selection of supplies. The site is right next to the N7 so you get vehicle noise at night. Self-catering accommodation is also available

Uppington.  Oranjerus River Resort.

Ablutions:  2 blocks. Spotless. Hot water.

Electric:   Yes.

Sites:  Lots of sites, mostly on grass but the 3 overlooking the river were sandy. There are brick braai stands with electric points and water plus movable braais.

 Other:  The Resort is on the banks of the Orange River. There's a bar and restaurant. The pool was OK but 1.5m in depth so would not be very suitable for young kids. There's a scullery with dishwashing and clothes washing sinks (hot water).
