- Ukhahlamba Drakensburg Park - Royal Natal, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife

Royal Natal is a KZN WIldlife Reserve in the Northern Drakensburg Mountains. The above image is the well known view of The Amphitheatre thatís seen on approaching the reserve. Our accommodation was one of the self-catering chalets and we had some wonderful walks in the mountains.

We wanted to walk to the top of the amphitheatre, but it's not possible to get to the there from the camp so had to drive for a couple of hours to the start of the trail.

There were several miles to walk along the base of the cliffs until we got to the one place where there was access to the top.......

...which involved climbing up 2 very long chain ladders!!!

Our second walk was to the 'Policeman's Helmet' which was on the ridge in front of the amphitheatre and across the valley from our chalet. From the camp it looked quite small....

............but see if you can spot Kevin in this photo on the right.

The third and final walk of our visit was meant to be a short, easy route but as the weather was so good we did a more demanding hike involving an ascent of 'The Crack' and then descending 'The Mudslide' - honest those were the names of the sections of the route!! It also involved negotiating obstacles with the help of ladders, chains and ropes.

The image below is from the plateau at the top of 'The Crack'.
