Botswana, October 2010 - Chobe National Park - Riverfront

After our trip to Zambia with the Bhejane group tour we spent a couple of days at Chobe Safari Lodge, our favourite place for camping in Kasane (S17 48.517 E25 08.740) as there's a lovely pool for cooing off.

We'd booked a sunset cruise which was due to leave at 3pm. As we were getting ready to board we noticed dark clouds to the south and soon afterwards it started raining with some thunder and lightning. The boat set off but after a few minutes the wind became very strong so we returned to the jetty.

Most of the passengers got off but a few of us stayed on board, trying to keep dry and watching the rain pour down - this was the first big storm of the year in Kasane. After an hour or so the rain stopped and the cruise started but with only a few passengers, so we had plenty of room to move around.

We saw a group of elephants crossing the river - they put the end of their trunck above the water in order to breathe.

There were plenty of buffalo enjoying the grass after the rain.

This crocodile was well over 2m long.

A zambian fisherman.

It was cool after the rain so several hippos were already out of the water.

Sunset.

We saw this family of warthogs several times around the campsite and chalets.

When we got back to the campsite after the river cruise we found that the inside of the tent was soaking wet - we hadn't put the flysheet on.... Fortunately we were able to get a room at the lodge (at a cost of £100 mind you) and the next day was fine so we could dry out the bedding and mattress.

Sheets, pillows and our sleeping bag hung out to dry.

Our tent has 2 'windows' in the roof so we were able to put the mattress out.

On our way back to South Africa we stayed at Woodlands Stop Over (S21 04.894 E27 27.842) which is near Francistown. We've stayed here several times and can recommend it. There's real grass, a lovely clear pool and good ablutions.
