Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. January 2012 - Lotheni

Lotheni was the first place in the Drakensberg that we visited about 20 years ago but then we stayed in a chalet. The campsite is further up the valley in a beautiful location.

There was no-one at the site when we arrived so we were able to pick the only site with a decent shady tree!

Location: S29 26.284 E29 31.041

The ablutions were well kept (soap and a towel provided) and there were hot showers. There's no power at the campsite.

We followed a steep path from the campsite down to the river - a lovely place to cool down!

There's a mountain hut nearby with a small dam in front of it.

Looking down the valley from near the campsite to the chalets.

To start with we had wonderful weather with clear blue skies but on the third day it started raining before midday and continued on and off all afternoon with a very heavy downpour for a couple of hours so we were very glad that we'd got 'sides' to our awning - there's just room for the 2 of us!
