Western Cape Part, December 2012 - Limietberg Nature Reserve, Bontebok National Park & Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve.

Limietberg Nature Reserve

Limietberg is one of the Cape Nature Reservs and is accessed from Bainskloof Pass built over 150 years ago as a route to the interior from Cape Town. It was designed by Andrew Baines and constructed by convicts who hacked and blasted the pass through the mountains.

We'd visited the Reserve briefly 2 years ago and wanted to see a bit more of the area. The campsite is set amongst shady trees by the river and lovely and quiet during the week. There's a swimming pool in the river, however it can get busy at weekends as it's very popular with day visitors.

A family of cape fraancolins at the campsite.

Bainskloof Pass.

There are several walks in the area. We followed the path from the campsite upstream passing several pools and small waterfalls until we reached the end of the track and the biggest of the waterfalls.

Bontebok National Park.

The campsite is close to the Breede River where you can swim in the pools.

These 3 bontebok were at the campsite every day.

We saw several small tortoises around the campsite.

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve.

Grootvadersbosch is only about 40km from Bontebok but is in the foothills of the mountains and so gets far more rainfall resulting in large forested areas in which there are several day walks.

We saw several species of fungii on our walks. This was one of the more common ones.

At first we though this was a flower but closer inpecction revealed that it was a fungi.

Beyond the forested valleys are the mountains.

The remainder of this trip will be uploaded once we get back to Richmond which will probably be around the end of February.
