England 2017 - Burston Hill, Buckinghamshire

When we're in the UK and not traveling we stay with my sister, Diana, and her husband, David, who live in half of a farmhouse a few miles from Aylesbury.

The farmhouse from the back garden.

Di, David and their dog Billy.

James, their eldest son, and his family visited one day. Kevin and I had a go with his drone. Amazing how high it went, that it would not go out of range and that you could instruct it to return to where it started from.

They have hens in the orchard so we get fresh eggs whenever we want - very tasty with huge yolks.

For the last few summers they've had a few pigs, they prefer rare breeds and this year have 4 sandy and blacks.

MIlton Keynes isn't far from the farm and it's excellent for cycling as there are loads of dedicated cycle ways. Our favourite places to walk and cycle are around and between Caldecotte and Willen Lakes.

Tring Reservoirs are another of our favourite places for walking.

The Grand Union canal is next to Tring Reservoirs.

The Wendover arm of the Grand Union canal is very quiet and makes for a great circular walk.

There are several National Trust properties in the area. In August we took the opportunity to visit Waddesdon Manor and Hughenden Manor.

We walked up to Waddesdon Manor (15 minutes) from the car park and approached from the 'back' garden.

There are acres of grounds to walk around. This is the aviary which has large cages with plenty of vegetation and exotic birds.

The rooms are sumptuously furnished but its difficult to take decent photos as they are generally quite dark, in order to protect the furnishings. This was the only room letting in some natural light.

There are 2 magnificent Sèvres collections in the house. There were getting on for 100 items in this style, each hand painted with different birds - beautiful.

Hughenden Manor is near High Wycombe. It used to be the home of Benjamin Disraeli. They recently discovered that it was used during WW2 for creating target maps for the RAF bombing raids.
