Botswana. February / March 2018

Chobe Game Reserve and Senyati Safari Camp.

We took 4 days to drive from Khutse to Kasane in the North of Botswana deciding to take it easy and stop each day in the early afternoon. Between Nata and Kasane we saw several elephants alongside the road.

Senyati Safari Lodge.
This Lodge is about 20km from Kasane and is our favourite campsite in the area. We stayed for 3 days which gave us time to book 3 days at Ihaha campsite in Chobe Game Reserve, do all the shopping we needed and sit back and relax and enjoy some of the animals passing by - the Lodge is between Chobe and Hwange in Zimbabwe so along a corridor route for animals.

We chose a site which was quite a way from the deck overlooking the main waterhole but it gave us a good view across the valley and there was a pol of water down below us. From our site we often saw elephants browsing in the bush and also saw buffalo and waterbuck

A waterbuck family across the valley from our site.

Late one afternoon we saw a large group of buffalo making their way along the valley. We watched them for a while and then I went across to the deck to get a better view of them - there were several hundred of them.

An elephant passing our campsite.

You get a great view of the waterhole from the deck.

Punky is a Grey Go-Away bird that Lulu rescued last year after she fell out of her nest. Lulu kept her indoors for a few months and then released her but Punky decided that she's rather stay with her human friends! The middle photo is of Punky's parents, they keep trying to get her to go with them but she just runs away from them and seeks protection from humans. She loves perching on people's shoulders - she then proceeded to nibble Kevin's glasses. When she sat on my shoulder she kept nibbling my earing.

Chobe Game Reserve
We spent 3 night at the Ihaha campsite which is on the banks of the Chobe River. We had a lovely site with great views of the river, some nice shade from a large tree and great sunsets.

We drove out on several occasions and saw lots of animal , far more than we expected as there was plenty of grazing and water away from the river. For the most part we drove along the sandy tracks near the river. On 1 drive, within a couple of kilometres of the campsite we must have seen several hundred elephants and around a thousand buffalo. They animals in the Park are so used to vehicles that they often don't move off the roads so we had to drive much closer to the elephants and buffalo that we would normally do otherwise we'd have just sat there for hours! We saw lots of baby elephants and buffalo. It was the 'teenager' bull elephants that we had to keep an eye on as they sometimes decided that we shouldn't move on.

Just a few of the other animals that we saw

We also saw plenty of birds

From our campsite we saw elephants in the river every afternoon and sometimes passing very close to our site. One afternoon we decided to drive to the ablution block (about 100m) for a shower as there were so many elephants around the site.

On our second morning drive we cane across this hippo carcass with lots of vultures around - they didn't appear to be able to teat the skin of the hippo. We returned in the afternoon and saw no vultures near the carcass and soon saw why as we then spotted 3 lions. Unfortunately they soon disappeared into the long grass nearby.

We had a brilliant time in Botswana and seeing all the elephant families at Chobe was wonderful. We're happy to sit and watch them playing in the water for ages!
