sThe Big Hole, Kimberley, South Africa

Diamonds were discovered in rocks near the surface and and graduallly the miners dug a huge hole. Eventually it became too dangerous to dig any deeper so shafts were sunk and tunnels made to access the diamonds. This area us now part of a museum.

Streets from the mining town have been recreated, There are shops, garages, houses, pubs, a bank and a bowling alley.

There's a mine head winding wheel and you can go down in a lift to see the tunnels that have been re-created to show what it was like underground.
