 3.  Weenen Game Reserve.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 days (and 3 nights) at this Reserve and would happily return.  We drove around most of the tracks in the reserve and enjoyed the scenery as well as seeing some animals.    There's a hide which overlooks a dam and is within walking distance of the camp (perhaps 300 metres) or you can drive there.

 Weenan Campsite

Our nice large site with lovely views.

One afternoon we saw several giraffe close tot he campsite.

A chameleon which was by our bakkie - I moved it to a nearby bush before we drove off.

A spider which appeared to be hanging in mid-air.  On closer inspection I could just make out the fine web.

Sunset on our first evening.

Same view a couple of days later.

Driving around the Reserve.

One morning we drove around nearly all the tracks in the reserve - some are 4x4 routes.  The information booklet that we got from reception was invaluable and we were able to locate all the points that it explained.  One of the tracks was along the route of an old railway line.

The remains of a station on the old railway.

The track makes use of this old railway bridge.

A zebra mare and her foal on the track ahead of us.

We drove up to this viewpointoverlooking the Boesmans valley.

We drove through tall grasses along several of the tracks.

 A red hartebeest.

We had 3 m

Towards the end of the drive we were lucky enough to see these rhino.

A large cricket in a tree.

The hide overlooking the dam.

We visited the hide on 3 occassions and had good sightings - especially of giraffe. On both days we saw between 15 and 20 giraffe.  On the second day we watched lots of them came down the hill towards the dam, sometimes singly and sometimes in a small group.  Some stopped for a drink while others nibbled at the trees.

 Our fir

A couple of very nervous warthog.

Part of a group of eland.

 Zebra.

 A male kudu.

It's always interesting watching giraffe drink.

This preying mantis was on the path by the hide.
