Botswana, Namibia and Victoria Falls. 2008 - Kwando River, Caprivi Strip, Namibia

We stopped at Mazambala Safari Lodge (S17 48.501 E23 20.756) www.mazambala.com which has a campsite as well as huts for guests. The campsite was a couple of km from the rest of the camp and the only way to get to the lodge was by a 10 minute boat ride.  At the lodge we were made most welcome by the owner, Andre, and spent the afternoon by the pool and on the high level deck overlooking the river and swamp.

We went on a boat trip which was excellent, not only because we saw plenty of animals and birds but also because our guide, Harris, was so knowledgeable. He was able to spot small animals and birds so easily despite the fact that he was steering the boat. We saw several water monitors, groups of hippos and a family of elephants taking their evening drink.

One of the hippos took a dislike to the boat and chased us, it went under the water and then suddenly emerged much closer to the boat making a lot of noise. It then disappeared under the water again.

Fortunately Harris seemed to know which groups of hippos to be wary of (they are territorial in the water) and kept the boat a good distance from them!

We went on an early morning walk, once again with Harris, which was fascinating as he explained how they use some of the trees and plants. He also spotted this snake in a bush - it took us ages to see it as it looked just like a branch (see below).

Very hot here at this time of the year so we were delighted that there was a big pool to swim in.
