South Africa.  Addo Elephant Park.   December 2023

 2.  Tuesday.

Tuesday Morning Drive

We had a fantastic morning drive, spending most of our time at or near the Domkrag Dam which is close to the northern edge of the Park.

There's a lookout point with benches which overlook the dam and surrounding countryside so we took coffee and rusks and sat and waited and watched as a large group of zebra came down for a drink.

We started to drive, heading south and east and soon spotted a large number of elephants which all appeared to be heading in the same direction back towards the dam so we stopped to watch them.

As we waited in the bakkie we saw a group heading up the road towards us.  They had a tiny calf with them and passed right next to us.

We decided to drive back to the lookout point by the dam. On our way back we saw a male kudu and a black-backed jackal.

We watched as the elephants approached the waterhole but were surprised that only a few stopped for a drink, the majority just carried on walking past the waterhole.

Once most of them had passed we got back in the bakkie to see if we could see where they were going and realised that there was another waterhole in the distance right next to the fence - sure enough they stopped there for a drink.  Sadly there was only a private track which went in that direction so we could only watch from afar as they had a drink and then slowly made their way along the fenceline, snacking on the way.

We carried on with our drive but didn't see much else apart from a few birds and a lone buffalo.

Spoonbill.

Crowned lapwing.

Male buffalo with branches attached to its horns and attendant cattle egret.

Cattle egret.

Back at Main Camp we went for a walk along the Discovery Trail which had information boards about the local area, flora and fauna.

Large specboom bushes along the trail.

Not sure which type of tortoise this is.
